Week Beginning 4th May 2020

Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Hello again, it’s hard to believe another week has passed, I don’t know about you but we’re finding the days merge into each other and it’s getting harder to remember what day it is! As before, we hope you are all keeping well and have been keeping safe and happy. Again, we are extending a huge thank you to all our families, we are certainly in the midst of strange times but hopefully if we all pull together we’ll soon start to see a return to normality.

So here is our second weekly newsletter with some ideas and suggestions around things you can do at home to support and compliment the learning we would have been doing in school. As before, I do want to emphasise that these are suggestions to support you and we do not want you to feel pressured to complete every suggestion. Remember, we would love to see what you have been doing or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at rainbow@malorees-inf.brent.sch.uk

So let’s start with at the beginning………….

Daily Exercise

Our suggestion is going to be to continue with your daily disco!! Music and dancing can have such appositive impact on lifting everyone’s mood and in these strange times it’s good to just have a bit of fun.

So as promised what’s been on my playlist…………I’ve definitely been revisiting my younger years and have been working my way through classic 80s – children ask your parents what I mean!! Also having watched ‘The Big Night In’ I have visited Amarillo a number of times. If you can have a look at the video

And have a go….it’s quite easy and it would be great if we could create our own version to celebrate our return to Rainbow.

As I write this I can see out of my living room window and it’s just as though someone has turned a tap, it’s raining and pouring so our outdoor recommendation is that old favourite dig out your wellies and raincoats and have fun in the puddles. Maybe you can find some mud and make some mud pictures or mud models – but don’t forget to wash your hands when you go back inside! And maybe take a photo and send it to us……………………….

Letter Formation/Writing

As we said last week, this term we would have been continuing with our writing focus activities. Keep encouraging the children to hold their pencils and pens between their thumb and fingers and if you can practice writing names – tracing first and when they get more confident copying from a card. It’s also good for the children to see that writing has a purpose so if you can involve them in writing a shopping list or a message that’s a great way to learn that there is a very good reason as to why we learn to write.

Did you get chance to look at the Peggy Leggo Program? If not, here’s the link…..

If you were able to have a go at ‘Tall Man’ then this week see if you can learn together about ‘Sideways’. If you didn’t get chance just start with ‘Tall Man’. Remember, you don’t have to have access to large paper or pens when you practice your lines, water on a wall or the floor will work just as well.

Phonics

In the last letter we shared some links to support the children’s phonic development. You can find these again below…………..

Practise Set 1 Speed Sounds daily 9.30 am (BST)

Click here to watch the daily phonic clip

Complete the Speed Sounds Practice Sheet for the sound learnt in the daily lesson Set 1 sheets.

Click the link for access to Set 1 Reading and Phonics Support Materials

Being able to listen to and hear sounds is an important part of the children’s development in phonics so here are some ideas for simple games you can play at home.

  • Have some quiet time when you listen together to the sounds either inside or outside and talk about what you could hear.
  • Find some objects that make a sound, hide them behind a screen (this could just be a tray) can you identify the objects from the sound?
  • Alternatively, put an object in a container, can you guess what it is just from the sound?

Reading

As we said as much as possible, we would always recommend reading real books when reading and sharing stories but here are the links we shared last week should you be in need of some new stories.

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

We’d also like to draw your attention to a lovely playlist from Barefoot Books

We had planned to create a little show for you based around ‘The Animal Boogie’ which is the first on the playlist So if you get chance do learn this one then hopefully we’ll be able to bring you our show on our return!

Numbers and Shapes

As we said, there are many opportunities for counting throughout the day. Where possible encourage the children to count real objects so they can practise counting groups of objects but if you have a dice to hand make it into a simple game, roll the dice and count claps or jumps. Sometimes counting groups of objects can be a bit tricky particularly as the number gets a little bigger so why not make some sets and have a go at matching objects to quantities. You could use plates and put a number on paper or just draw some circles with a number and get the children to fill them with objects but it has to be the right number. Encourage the children to touch the objects as they count. And don’t forget your Number rhymes…………...

Were you able to find some squares around your home? We’re going for an easy one this week…….who can find the most rectangles? Let us know how many you find…….. 

Family Activities

We hope you are all able to take some time to play, talk and just have some together.

We hope you enjoyed the banana oat cookies last week. Making play dough is also a ggod way of making something you can them play with…………………………..

All you need is 2 cups of flour (it can be out-of date) 1 cup of salt, a little oil and water to mix. If you want to jazz it up you can add colour (food colouring if you have but paint usually works too), glitter if you have any but you don’t need to. You can have just as much fun plain Mix the salt and flour, add a little oil and water to make a dough. It will keep for a couple of days, preferably in the fridge if you have space.

How about some family portraits, you can draw them but why not see if you can make some funny family faces out of food e.g sandwiches or if you like baking a pie or decorating a biscuit. When I was little my mum used to make rhubarb pie with rhubarb that grew in our garden, it always had a face, often it was a happy face but if we hadn’t been making good choices (I blame my brother – obviously) the pie used to appear with a sad face!! Try and make sure there’s lots of happy faces!!

On Friday 8th May there should have been a special bank holiday to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day and there would have been lots of fun things going on all around the country. Sadly that has had to be cancelled but why not just have some special family time on Friday. Have a movie afternoon, a picnic in the garden (or a carpet Picnic if you’re inside), play games together or just have sing and dance together. Friday should have been all families celebrating together – let’s see if we still can……

And of course Don’t forget your Rainbows!! We would love it if you could make and save some extra Rainbow pictures for…………..RAINBOW!! but you make Rainbow flags and wave  them on Friday. Roll up some scrap paper if you don’t have a stick – it will work just as well.

Parents

We hope you are having the oppportunity to make some time for yourselves, even if its just to stop and have a cup of tea for 10 minutes! We’re sure some days it must feel like a juggling act trying to balance online learning with working from home and the daily complexities of lockdown. If you do need any support please reach out, you can contact us via our rainbow e-mail and we will do what we can to help and support you.  Please make time to look after yourselves and remember some days just have to be good enough and that is perfectly ok

As we said at the beginning we would love to hear your news so please get in touch via our e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to.

We’re thinking of you all and hoping that we are a week closer to being back in Rainbow.

Until then, take care and stay well and safe.
