Week Beginning 11th May 2020

Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Hello, We hope you’ve all had a calm week. As we approach a very different May Bank holiday we hope you will all be able to spend some time just having some fun over the long weekend. We hope you are all keeping well and have been keeping safe and happy. As we wait to hear whether the current restrictions will be eased we again thank you all for your support and hard work during these unprecedented times.

So here is our third weekly newsletter with some ideas and suggestions around things you can do at home to support and compliment the learning we would have been doing in school. As before, I do want to emphasise that these are suggestions to support you and we do not want you to feel pressured to complete every suggestion. Thank you to the families who have contacted us, we have enjoyed seeing what you have been doing. If you’d like to share some more pictures or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at rainbow@malorees-inf.brent.sch.uk

So let’s start with at the beginning………….

Daily Exercise

We hope you are having fun with your daily disco’s. I’m enjoying just having time to listen to music and revisit old favourites like ‘Dancing Queen’ and remember happy family memories. Dancing Queen was a favourite of my Grandad’s and we often used to dance around the kitchen and living room together when I went to visit. Here’s the link to the Mamma Mia version of Dancing Queen if you would like to add some actions…….

If you’d still like to visit Amarillo, just look back to last week’s newsletter on the school website and give it a go.

The sunnier weather seems to have returned so I hope you are all managing to spend a little time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. We’ve seen some lovely pictures of outdoor activities this week. Let us know if you’ve been doing something new like learning to ride your bike. Ordinarily, we would be doing lots of our learning outdoors as the weather improves so hopefully it won’t be long until we can be outside, making the most of the better weather again.

Letter Formation/Writing

Well done to everyone who has been practicing their writing. Thank you if you’ve sent us a picture – we have enjoyed seeing you trying hard to hold your pencils correctly and write your names. Keep practicing and don’t forget your messages and lists if you get chance.

Did you get chance to look at the Peggy Leggo Program? If not, here’s the link…..

Well done if you have been having a go at Peggy Leggo. After ‘Tall Man’ and ‘Sideways’ comes ‘Small Man’.  Remember, you don’t have to have access to large paper or pens when you practice your lines, water on a wall or the floor will work just as well.

Phonics

In the last letter we shared some links to support the children’s phonic development. You can find these again below…………..

Practise Set 1 Speed Sounds daily 9.30 am (BST)

Click here to watch the daily phonic clip

Complete the Speed Sounds Practice Sheet for the sound learnt in the daily lesson Set 1 sheets.

Click the link for access to Set 1 Reading and Phonics Support Materials

As we said being able to listen to and hear sounds is an important part of the children’s development in phonics. Here are some new ideas for exploring sounds at home using your body as a percussion instrument.

  • Sine a song with actions, e.g Twinkle Twinkle, little star or Zoom, Zoom, Zoom.
  • Encourage the children to copy a sequence of body sounds using claps, finger clicks etc
  • Encourage the children to use their voices to make slow/fast, quiet/loud or long/short sounds.

Reading

I discovered a new story this week all about Rainbows!! In the story the The Sun and the Clouds are best friends. Together they keep the world warm, the gardens growing, and the sky full of beautiful rainbows. But one day they get into a fight and refuse to be in the sky together. And that means there are no longer any rainbows. Without rainbows, the colors start disappearing until Earth was left with no color … except for one little forgotten box of crayons in one little school desk.

I wonder what the crayons did to save the rainbows, share your ideas together and if you can send your ideas to us and hopefully when we return to Rainbow we’ll be able to read the story and find out what they did but to give you a clue they did succeed– hurray! 

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

We’d also like to draw your attention to a lovely playlist from Barefoot Books

Don’t forget ‘The Animal Boogie’, we’d really like you to learn this one if you can 

Numbers and Shapes

The best way with numbers is little and often. As we said where possible encourage the children to count real objects so they can practise counting groups of objects but if you have a dice to hand make it into a simple game, roll the dice and count claps or jumps. We’d really like you to keep counting groups of objects as it can be a bit tricky particularly as the number gets a little bigger and don’t forget your Number rhymes…………...

Did you find lots of rectangles? I’m sure you did, when you start looking they are everywhere!! So this week…….can you find any circles? Where did you find them? Let us know what you find…….. 

Family Activities

We hope you are all able to take some time to play, talk and just have some together.

We hope you are all able to take some time to play, talk and just have some fun together.

We hope you enjoyed making play dough, as I’ve come to realise from a recent supermarket visit flour is quite difficult to get at the moment so here are some ideas of simple drawing activities using nothing more than a table top or tray and some store cupboard resources.

Oats or rice can be fun to draw in and with a quick wiggle of the tray you can simply start again!

Shaving foam on a table top is another good one (if you have spare shaving foam!!)

If you have any corn flour hiding in the cupboard mixing it with a little water can create a fascinating effect that you can enjoy exploring, is it solid or is it a liquid?!!!

It’s a good time of year for planting seeds but obviously seeds are not that easy to get at  the minute. Why not see if you can plant an orange or apple pip and just see what happens. I remember my brother having some success with planting an orange pip. I wasn’t as successful but then I’ve never been known for my green fingers or my ability to remember to water a plant………………

Usually  at this time of the year we would have been beginning to think about our family outing which usually involves a visit to a gallery and a picnic. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will still be able to do this in some form. You may have seen that The National Portrait Gallery and The Duchess of Cambridge have launched a community photography project called ‘Hold Still’ to document these extraordinary times. There will be three themes ‘Helpers and Heroes’, ‘Your New Normal’ and ‘Acts of Kindness’. If you can this week take some pictures of ‘Your New Normal’ and let’s see if we can create our own little exhibition in Rainbow in support of this project. You can save the pictures until we return to school or e-mail them to us at rainbow@malorees=inf.brent.sch.uk

And of course Don’t forget your Rainbows!! How about making some Rainbow beads by painting pasta in rainbow colours and threading them onto whatever you have available…string, wool, ribbon, a thin strip cut from a plastic bag…

There’s always Rainbow handprints too – hand and finger painting is always a firm favourite,

Parents

We hope you are all keeping well and are managing a little time for yourselves. We are very conscious that it has now been 7 weeks since we were last altogether and while we keep hoping for clear news about how the restrictions will be lifted and when, we are still waiting.

If you feel your child would benefit from a visit as the restrictions ease please do get in touch and let us know. At the moment that may simply be a wave through the window but if you feel it would help please get in touch and we’ll arrange a time. As we said before if you do need any support please reach out, you can contact us via our rainbow e-mail and we will do what we can to help and support you.  I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to look after yourselves and as we said last week some days just have to be good enough and that is perfectly ok!

As we said at the beginning we would love to hear your news so please get in touch via our e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to.

We are missing you all lots and continue to hope we will soon be back in Rainbow.

Until then, take care and stay well and safe.

Linda, Ann, Ana and Alice
