Malorees School

Week Beginning 15th June 2020

Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Hello again at the end of another week. I hope you are all keeping well. It seems very strange to think that it’s now mid June and the last time we saw you all was March. Back in March we had no idea how long the lockdown would last and we didn’t even consider that school would not reopen as normal after the Easter holidays. How wrong we were!! But throughout the past weeks the one thing that has at the centre of our team discussions has been how we could manage to see you all if school didn’t reopen normally. I can speak for the team when I say that we have felt really sad at the thought that the confusion of the week before lockdown could become the end to Rainbow Class for this academic year. We do now know school won’t be returning to normal this term and because of that we have a plan! Over the next week we are going to be putting together a little surprise for all of our special Rainbow friends. We will be checking we have everyone’s address and grouping them so if anyone has moved please could you let us know, we don’t want to surprise the wrong children and then in next week’s newsletter we’ll let you know when we are hoping to be knocking on your door with a little surprise. We can be flexible so do let us know if a particular day doesn’t work – nothing will be set in stone. We are really looking forward to seeing you all whether that is through a smile and a wave or a socially distanced chat – we’d love to hear your news if you have time.

It has been lovely to see families who have been collecting older siblings over the gate this week. Sadly for now I wasn’t able to open the gate but we are now hoping that that is going to change and we will be able to welcome some of the children back to Rainbow before the summer holidays. Due to social distancing recommendations we won’t be able to bring the whole group back and I appreciate that some families will prefer to wait until September before returning to school. Thank you to parents who have returned their questionnaires. We will be contacting you shortly.

Our newsletters will continue throughout the summer term so if you do have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us via our rainbow e-mail rainbow@malorees-inf.brent.sch.uk In these ever changing times, we may not know the answer but we’ll do our best to help…..

We would love to see what you have been doing or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at

So let’s start with………….

Daily Exercise

So, what have you been dancing to this week? If you have a favorite song which you would like us to share with your friends do let us know. Did anyone try to dance like a bear? This week we’re thinking about the birds……Lots of your grown ups will know the song in the link below – ask them if they’ll show you the moves and then you can all dance together. We always have fun with this one as we always like to include a couple of old favorites in our Rainbow shows……………..

We would have been using the version of the song which was recorded by The Overtones. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a good link to this particular version of the song.

So here’s a link to the original version of the song – there are lots of great actions in this one which would have found their way into our show so have a look and then have some fun!

The children in Rainbow always enjoy their weekly music class so if you feel like having a change from dancing and joining in with some music instead, here’s a link to a  DaCapo class for you to join in with………..

I hope you are finding it easier to enjoy some time outdoors. Summer is always a great time for learning new skills which will support our Physical Development. Throwing and catching with a partner is a great skill to practice. Remember throwing and catching can come in many guises whether that be a ball, a bean bag, a Frisbee, or simply something that is relatively easy to throw and catch like a teddy – sorry teddy bears, it might be fun! Also if you can access a skipping rope or just some rope there are lots of jumping games you can play as well as learning to skip which is often trickier than the children think it is going to be….

Letter Formation/Writing

Well done to everyone who has been continuing to practice their writing. Were you all able to make a start on your books? Hopefully your books have a picture of you and your name already so for your second page, can you draw a picture of your family and either ask your grown ups to write their names or if you think you can be a rise to the challenge rabbit, ask your grown ups to show you how to write the names and then have a go at copying them on to your picture. We’re really looking forward to seeing your books and I’m sure your reception teachers will love learning all about you from your own books. You have become authors!

Well done to everyone who is trying hard with the Peggy Leggo Program. Here’s the link…..

If you are following the program as we’ve introduced it in the newsletters then this week we are looking at Under the Gate – a curved movement which goes down and under. As we make the movement we say ‘Down and under the gate’. Remember to practice doing the movement really big with your hand and arm before you have a go on paper. I wonder how you are finding the curves? They are a little trickier than the lines so keep trying and give it a go! As we said last week, its ok to take this at your own pace and build in lots of opportunities for practice but well done to everyone who is giving it a go.

Phonics and Reading

It has been lovely to see some pictures of you joining in with the daily phonics lessons. I’ve seen some very impressive ‘Fred Fingers’ so well done everyone……

You can find these links again below…………..

Join in with the Daily Speed Sounds Lesson -

Complete the Speed Sounds Practice Sheet for the sound learnt in the daily lesson Set 1 sheets.

Click the link for access to Set 1 Reading and Phonics Support Materials

This half term we would have been really focussing on the set one speed sounds so if you can revisit these each week that would help the children when they go into reception.

If you can revisit some of the listening activities we have sent out previously. We’ll be sending some new ideas re listening activities next week

Reading

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories including barefoot books...

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

We’d also like to draw your attention to a lovely playlist from Barefoot Books

But remember it’s good to re-read old favourites too. Online books have their place but they won’t replace the magic of a real book………

Numbers and Shapes

I hope you were able to find some interesting shapes and numbers. This week we’d like you to start thinking about addition. Here’s a simple shopping game. Find some objects or some pictures and label them with a price between 1p and 6p. Choose what you would like to buy……start with 2 objects and see if you can add the prices together. If you have any pennies you could use real money or just little circles to represent coins. If you want to make it a little more challenging you could buy more than 2 items and see if you can find the total.

If you’d like to practice counting here are a couple of links to some counting songs…. You can choose whether to sing along to 1-10 or you may like to be a rise to the challenge rabbit and try 1-20…..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR-cfDsHCGA if you want to join in with 1-10 or

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0Ajq682yrA  for our 1-20 rise to the challenge rabbits.

Your shape challenge this week is an outdoor challenge again.  Choose a place, e.g, the front of your house/flat, a car, your street, the park. How many different shapes can you find? You may want to choose 2 different places and see which has the most…..I wonder if you will be surprised by what you find. Have fun

Family Activities

I hope you are enjoying the opportunity to start catching up with family and friends as lockdown restrictions continue to ease. Let’s hope the sun decides to make a return and we haven’t seen the best of the summer weather during lockdown.

How did you all get with our Art Project? Were you able to find some interesting facts about L S Lowry?

Below is the painting we are suggesting you look at. It’s simply called Family Group 1962. As we said last week if you have a different painting that is a family favorite then please feel free to choose that one. The activities will work just as well.

Your task for this week is to look at and talk about the picture using the simple question What can you see? You may talk about the subject of the painting, colours, shapes. Also if you can talk about what the children like about the painting and what they don’t like and note down their ideas. Next week we’ll be thinking about painting some pictures inspired by the painting so get the children to think about what they would need to paint their own family portrait and see if they can find what they need………

Keep making your rainbows………..we have a classroom to fill……….. :)

Parents

For the first time in what feels like forever I’m sitting in Rainbow as I write this. The school is very quiet and there are lots of new signs but it’s nice to hear children chatting and laughing again and be able to talk to parents at drop off and pick up times. As I said earlier, at the moment I’m only able to hang around by the gate but soon I’ll be able to open the gate to some of you and it will be lovely to welcome you back. To our families who don’t return this term we are looking forward to seeing you on the doorstep and to our families who do, we’ll still be popping up on your doorstep with a little rainbow surprise. You won’t miss out! I hope as we all adjust to the ‘new normal’, the sun will return and we will all be able to look forward to spending more time with friends and families in the weeks ahead while reflecting on what a strange year 2020 is turning out to be. It’s strange to think that in the future children will learn about 2020 in their history lessons and we’ll be able t say ‘We were there!’ but hopefully alongside the challenges we’ll be able to share the positive moments as well and the good things which came out of it. For us, Rainbow 19/20 will certainly be one of the most memorable years. We’re aware that for many families the transition to home learning will be one of the more memorable moments and for many has also been one of the biggest challenges. Thank you from Rainbow for rising to that challenge and for doing the best you could whether that has been a little home learning or a lot of home learning. Most importantly, we hope that despite the challenges you have managed to stay safe, happy and well.  We really are looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Till then we do enjoy hearing your news so please do get in touch via our e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to and if you have any questions we’ll certainly do our best to help.

We continue to send you all our very best wishes and until we meet again, Take Care………..
