Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Hello again. We hope you are all keeping well after what has been an interesting week! We hope you were able to take some time over the Bank Holiday weekend to participate in a small way in the VE Day anniversary celebrations. It was lovely to see communities coming together safely despite the current lockdown to acknowledge and celebrate the bravery of men, women and children during what must have been a very turbulent and often frightening time. It also served as a positive reminder during these unsettling times that happier times will be ahead.

Of course, as you will be aware the Bank Holiday weekend ended with the latest announcements from the Prime Minister regarding our current situation and the possibility of changes to the lockdown restrictions going forward. One of the big changes was the phased reopening of schools and as you will already know the reopening of Nursery’s was announced as being part of the first phase. At present, the school is working with the local authority to plan out what this will look like in reality. While we recognise that not knowing how this is going to look can be frustrating we ask, for now, if you could just be patient for a while longer. The safety and wellbeing of the children (and staff) will be at the forefront of all the decisions made and you will be informed as soon as a definite plan is in place. Thank you, in advance, for your patience and understanding.

So here is our next weekly newsletter with some ideas and suggestions around things you can do at home to support and compliment the learning we would have been doing in school. I continue to emphasise that these are suggestions to support you and we do not want you to feel pressured to complete every suggestion. Thank you to the families who have contacted us, we have enjoyed seeing what you have been doing. If you’d like to share some more pictures or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at rainbow@malorees-inf.brent.sch.uk

So let’s start with at the beginning………….

Daily Exercise

We hope you are still having fun with your daily disco’s. Obviously, I have been doing a lot of thinking around our return to Rainbow and whether we will be able to bring you our postponed show! I don’t want to give too much away except to say my daily disco has involved making up simple dance routines (so I can remember them!) to well known songs which we can teach the children so that they can impress you with their moves. We do have a favorite finale song though which usually makes an appearance in our show. It’s a popular choice for us as it’s one of the few songs that mentions Rainbows and you can dance to it.

Usually by the end of our shows an element of free-styling has taken over so do have a listen and a dance. There will be an opportunity for you adults to join in too!

I hope you are all managing to spend some time outdoors. I’ve been thinking a lot about things I used to enjoy with my family when I was younger and my favorite was my Dad’s welly walks so if you get chance this week dig out your wellies and go exploring…………… Sunday morning was our regular welly walk time and we went exploring in lots of different places……….the park, the canal, along the local paths…… and we just talked about what we could see and what we found. Give it a go…..sometimes the simple things leave us with the best memories.

Letter Formation/Writing

Well done to everyone who has been practicing their writing. Thank you if you’ve sent us a picture – we have enjoyed seeing you trying hard to hold your pencils correctly and write your names. Keep practicing and don’t forget your messages and lists if you get chance.

Did you get chance to look at the Peggy Leggo Program? If not, here’s the link…..

Well done if you have been having a go at Peggy Leggo. So far we have looked at ‘Tall Man’, ‘Sideways’ and ‘Small Man’ all of which form lines. Before we move on your task for this week is to make a picture using all three lines.  Remember, water on a wall or the floor works just as well as pens and paper.

Phonics

In the last letter we shared some links to support the children’s phonic development. You can find these again below…………..

Here are some new ideas for exploring listening and hearing sounds at home. This week we are thinking about Rhyme and Rhythm……

  • Play around with words – can you work hear and talk about how many syllables are in a word.
  • Move in time to a beat (this can be clapped) fast, slow or give an action such as skipping or marching a sound, for example, 1 clap – hop, 2 claps – skip, 3 claps – marching.
  • Have fun with rhyming words, can you recognise when two words rhyme?
  • Have fun with rhyming strings, can you make up a really long one? Remember its ok to use nonsense words that you have made up.

Reading

How did you get on last week with your ideas about what the crayons did to save the Rainbow? By the wonder of Amazon I now have the copy of the book and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you all soon.

This week I thought we could have a think about our favourite colours and why we like them? I have always liked Red, in fact, I’m sitting on a red sofa as I write this. So why do I like Red?  I think its bright and fun. It’s the colour of hearts and poppies and it was the felt tip pen I always used first and consequently the one which ran out first! At the moment, I would have to say my favourite colour is RAINBOW!! Why…….because it reminds me of all of you, it’s helping everyone to see that things will get to normal and there will be fun and happy times ahead and seeing a real rainbow appear in the sky always makes me smile.

I wonder what your favourite colours are, I’m guessing for some of you it might be Rainbow too but I think there will be some pink and purple in there too! Talk about it with your family, maybe you could find out their favourite colours too.

Don’t forget ‘The Animal Boogie’, we’d really like you to learn this one if you can.

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

We’d also like to draw your attention to a lovely playlist from Barefoot Books

Don’t forget ‘The Animal Boogie’, we’d really like you to learn this one if you can 

Numbers and Shapes

Well done if you have been practicing your numbers and counting. This week I thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the numbers themselves so ask your grown ups if they can write some numbers for you on pieces of paper – 1 number per paper or if you have some number cards or playing cards at home you can use them instead. Start with the numbers 1-10, ask your grown ups to mix the numbers up then see if you can put them back into the correct order or sequence. If you find that a little tricky, then start with the numbers 1-6 and if you find it easy you could try the numbers 1-15 or 1-20. You can also turn the numbers over so you can’t see them, choose one and see if you can do claps or jumps to match the number on the card. Have fun!

Thank you to everyone who has been doing their shape challenge. We are very impressed with the number of shapes you have managed to find!! How did you get on with the circles? Were they easy to find or more difficult? This week…….see if you can find any triangles? Where did you find them? Let us know what you find……..

Family Activities

We hope you are all having lots of fun together as a family.

Here’s a little experiment for you this week…………………..

Can you make a bubble? What would be a good thing to use to make bubbles? Maybe you could make a bubble painting? Please ask a grown up before you start experimenting…….

Were any of you able to plant a seed last week? If you did then remember to look after it………….

We know how much you like building dens – the dens you were building in Forest School were so impressive!! So why not make a Duvet Den this week…..All you need is a couple of chairs, a duvet and some cushions to make it cosy inside. If you want to make a den outside, ask your grown ups for a blanket and then see what you can find in your gardens to build your den with…….

Last week we told you about the community photography project ‘Hold Still’ that has been launched by The National Portrait Gallery and The Duchess of Cambridge to document these extraordinary times. Last week we asked you to take some pictures of ‘Your New Normal’. This week can you take some pictures of ‘Helpers and Heroes’, I’m sure you see lots every single day! Remember, you can save the pictures until we return to school or e-mail them to us at rainbow@malorees=inf.brent.sch.uk

And of course Don’t forget your Rainbows!!  Maybe this week as we’re thinking about favourite colours, you could make a picture or a paper collage using your favourite colours BUT  please ask your grown ups before you tear up their magazines or papers!!

Parents

To me this feels like it has been a week of questions with no clear answers. I’m sure for many of you that has been the same. I’m hoping that we will soon have some clarity and we will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. As I said at the beginning the school is working hard to put a plan together which will enable the children to return to school safely and we are looking forward to seeing you all when that time arrives. As we said last week if you feel your child would benefit from a wave through the window please get in touch and we’ll arrange a time and if you do need any support please reach out, you can contact us via our rainbow e-mail and we will do what we can to help and support you. Hopefully it won’t be long now until we start to see a return to normality – I didn’t have to queue at the supermarket this week, I’m taking that as a positive sign although they still didn’t have any flour!! I’m going to end this week by saying keep safe and well and be proud of what you’ve achieved – keeping your children safe and happy during lockdown is a big task. But if you do need a little time to yourself put the television on and take over the duvet den!!!

We do enjoy hearing your news so please do get in touch via our e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to.

Take Care everybody, stay safe and well and hopefully we’ll be back in Rainbow soon.
