Malorees School

Week Beginning 27th April 2020

Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Firstly, from the Nursery Team we’d like to say a big hello, this is not how we were expecting to be starting the summer term! We hope you are all keeping well and are making the most of this extended time to together at home. To our families who are keyworkers – Thank You, we really appreciate your hard work and commitment. To our families who are currently in lockdown and working from home – Thank you, hopefully if we all follow the advice we’ll soon able to come back together in Rainbow.

Going forward our plan is to send out a weekly newsletter with some ideas and suggestions around things you can do at home to support and compliment the learning we would have been doing in school. I do want to emphasise that these are suggestions to support you. Lots of you will already have been doing and are doing great things.

We would love to see what you have been doing or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at

Daily Exercise

I would love to be able to tell you that I get up every morning and I do the Joe Wicks workout but I don’t! So instead of posting a link to something I don’t do,  I’m going to invite you to join me in a Daily Disco and yes I do do this!! How does work………..

It can happen whenever you feel like having a bit of fun, children – ask your mum or dad to pick out their favourite songs and just go for it…………simple and guaranteed to make you all smile. Give it a go and next week I may just share my playlist with you.

As the weather continues to improve, I hope you are able to all enjoy some outdoor time – in Rainbow the children love to dig. If you have access to a garden a little digging area is a good idea – using different tools is great for developing motor skills. Use what you have, old spoons work just as well as spades and as for the holes, digging to Australia is an oldie but goodie! Mud kitchens are another much loved outdoor activity and again no special tools are needed, just use what you have.

Letter Formation/Writing

This term we would have been continuing with our writing focus activities. As part of this we would have been encouraging the children to hold their pencils and pens between their thumb and fingers and we would have been practicing our names by tracing first, then copying from a name card until we are able to write our names independently. You can do the same with family names too.

We would also have been introducing the Peggy Lego Program to support letter formation.

To learn more goggle Youtube Peggy Lego program and the Lil Peeps OT introduction video should appear.

This week see if you can learn together about ‘Tall Man’. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to large paper or pens when you practice your lines, water on a wall or the floor will work just as well.

Phonics

As a school we have been introducing Read, Write, Inc to support the children with their reading development. Below are links to activities which will support the childrens’ phonic development,

Practise Set 1 Speed Sounds daily 9.30 am (BST)

Reading

With reading while as much as possible we would always recommend reading real books and we know that you all share stories regularly at home. However, Lockdown is making accessing new stories more difficult. Below are some links to storytime and the BookTrust where you can access stories online should you need to.

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

Numbers and Shapes

There are many opportunities for counting throughout the day. Where possible encourage the children to count real objects so they can practise counting groups of objects but if you have a dice to hand make it into a simple game, roll the dice and count claps or jumps. Meal times are a great opportunity for counting out cutlery etc as you set the table. Alternatively, have a carpet picnic – real or with toys – and encourage the children to count out the cups, plates etc. Number rhymes are also a great way to practise counting.

Your shape challenge for this week is find squares in your home.

Where did you find them and how many did you find? Let us know what you find…….

Family Activities

The most obvious but one of the best……follow the children’s interests, play together and talk together.

If you like baking try making some banana oat cookies. All you need to make 8 cookies is

1 banana, ½ cup of oats, 40g chocolate chips.

Mash the banana in a bowl. Stir in the oats and the chocolate chips.

Divide the mixture into 8 balls on a baking tray, then flatten into cookies with the back of spoon and bake at 180/gas mark 4 for approx. 20 minutes.

Allow to cool and ENJOY!!

Celebrate real life Superheroes like Captain Tom Moore. What an amazing example of how small things can have a huge impact and what a great example Captain Tom has been to us all! He will celebrate his 100th birthday on 30th April. Why not join the celebrations by making him a birthday card. They can be sent to

Captain Tom Moore, C/O Post Office Limited, 67 Bedford Road,

Marston Moretaine, MK43 0LA, Bedfordshire, England

Don’t forget your Rainbows!! I’m sure lots of you have been making Rainbows. We would love it if you could make and save some extra Rainbow pictures for…………..RAINBOW!! We’d love to decorate Rainbow with your lovely pictures.

Parents

We hope that the suggestions will be helpful. Our most important suggestion is for you as parents to please look after yourselves. If you can stay safe and happy during these strange times the children will feel safe and happy. If you have a challenging day then please take extra care of yourselves. Put the television on, get the tablet out and take a little time for your own wellbeing…….

As we said at the beginning we would love to hear your news so please get in touch via our

e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to.

We are missing you all lots and are so looking forward to when we can welcome you all back.

Until then, take care and stay well and safe.

Linda, Ann, Ana and Alice
