Week Beginning 22nd June 2020

Rainbow News

Dear Children and Parents,

Hello, I hope you are all keeping well. Firstly, thank you to parents who returned their questionnaires to indicate their interest in returning to school.  It has been lovely to speak to you this week. The Rainbow social bubble will start from next week, we are close to maximum numbers and due to the current advice from the DFE we are only able to offer one social bubble as the team are only able to work with one group. Sadly while this does mean we won’t be able to reopen to the whole group, if you didn’t return your questionnaire but would be interested in a place please return your questionnaire to the office as soon as possible and we will contact you should a place become available. To our families who will be returning next week we are looking forward to seeing you. While we have tried as much as possible to keep things as normal as possible, obviously there has to be some changes in line with the new ‘normal’ and you will receive a letter on Monday which will explain some of the changes. You will also receive a questionnaire just asking you to give us some information around what the children have been doing in terms of home learning and home experiences throughout lockdown – if you are able to fill this in we would really appreciate it as it will help us to plan our time back in class and as you will see from the letter it is not going to be as easy to have a conversation at drop off and pick up times as these will have to look slightly different to normal. Whether you have been able to do a lot or a little, if it’s been a positive time or quite frankly a bit of a challenge please let us know. I, for one, feel like I’ve just been stuck in the strangest of times and like many there have been good days, bad days and some really very strange days when I just didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing – I’m sure many of you have felt the same and probably on the same day regarding the latter. I’m really looking forward to a return to some sort of normality, however that may look.

For all our families we have some Rainbow treats ready for you and we’ll be coming out to do some doorstep deliveries and to say hello. For next week we will be starting with the children who are joining the social bubble so that we’ve said hello before the bubble opens. Our plan is that these visits will take place on Wednesday, I will be in touch on Monday just to check whether an AM or PM slot would work best for you and if Tuesday would work better for you please do let us know. We are looking forward to seeing you all and saying hello.

We would love to see what you have been doing or if you would just like to say hello you can e-mail us at

Hands up if you had a go at being a bird and tried flapping and shaking your tail feathers. We always have a lot of fun with that song…..We’re going to work our way through the animals that would have appeared in our show, they may be slightly different to the animals in the story but we always like to make the stories our own……

This week it’s the turn of the snakes and it’s time for a bit of slithering and wiggling. The song I’m sharing is a good one to dance to. I’m feeling really pleased that I found a link to this as I rediscovered this song from my high school disco days on a cd called ‘Even more forgotten 80s’ which was way before the days of youtube – I hope you have fun with it…..there’s actions 

I’m also sharing a link to a song which really made smile at the beginning of lockdown all those weeks ago. To see everyone using music and dance to keep their spirits up when we really didn’t know what was ahead really helped to keep my spirits up and again it’s a great song to dance to so enjoy!! Let’s hope it’s not long until we are ALL dancing together again………..

Despite the rain and the storms this week it’s sounding like next week the temperatures could rise again and we could be in for some hot sunny weather. There’s only one possible suggestion for hot weather and that is………….water play. Go on a hunt to find any containers which you can fill with water and just have some fun. You don’t even have to worry about getting wet, if we hit the predicted temperatures you’ll dry before you can get back inside……..Have fun!

Letter Formation/Writing

How is everyone getting on with their books? Hopefully your books will now have a picture of you and your name and a picture of your family and their names. This week we’d like you to add a page which says when your birthday is and how old you are, you could draw a picture or ask your grown ups to help you to add some words about how you like to celebrate your birthday. I’m expecting a birthday cake may be appear on many of your pages. If you can copy the words yourself then be a give it a go grasshopper and have a go. I’ve seen some fantastic writing this week so I know you can do it!

Well done to everyone who is trying hard with the Peggy Leggo Program. Here’s the link…..

If you are following the program as we’ve introduced it in the newsletters then we are coming to the end of the movements and from next week we’ll be sending a selection of letters to practice which also practice each movement in turn. Our final movement is ‘Starts with a click, goes round and stops’. If that sounds a little confusing this is the movement which would help you to form letters such as O and C. Remember the point to start is at the top. This one may be a bit tricky so keep practicing. Don’t worry if you’ve taken it at your own pace just keep practicing.

Phonics and Reading

I have been so impressed this week with the children who have been trying so hard with learning and using their letter sounds. Give yourselves a big Well Done!! I’m so proud of you all.

You can find these links again below…………..

Here are some new ideas for listening games, this week we are thinking about voice sounds………

  • Make sounds with your voice, e.g. Be a Clock – tick tock.
  • Play a simple game using CVC words like Cat, Sat, Mat, Dog etc Adult says the word and the children say it back by saying the sounds in the word using their robot voice, e.g. CAT becomes C-A-T

  • Play a voice game, make sounds which are ‘long’, ‘short’, ‘quiet’, ‘loud’, ‘high’, ‘low’

  • Listen to and sing songs.

  • Add sounds when you are sharing stories, e.g. animal sounds.

These games will all help to develop the children’s listening skills which in turn will help them to develop their phonic skills.

Reading

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories including barefoot books...

Below are the links we have previously shared to a range of online stories

Listen to storytime with Nick every Monday, Wednesday and Friday Storytime with Nick

Share picture books at the Book Trust

We’d also like to draw your attention to a lovely playlist from Barefoot Books

Nursery rhymes are a great way to learn about rhyme and rhythm so below is a link to Mr Tumble’s Nursery Rhyme playlist and you could learn to sing some Makaton signs as you sing. Our favourite rhyme is on the playlist….see if you can find it.

Don’t forget to let us know what your favourite stories have been while you’ve been at home. Mine is definitely ‘How the crayons saved the Rainbow’, I’m looking forward to sharing it with you soon.

Numbers and Shapes

How did you get on with your shopping game? This week we’d like you to keep thinking about addition. Have a look and see if you can find a dice, if you can’t make some simple number cards with 1-6 in dots like a dice on the card. Start by rolling the dice or choosing a card, can you say the number that is one more than the number on the dice/card? If you want to try something a little trickier and you have two dice or you can just use the number cards. Roll both dice or choose two cards and see if you can add together the numbers on the dice/cards. Did you get a big number or a small number?

Counting songs are a great way to past some time and practice counting , here are a couple of links to some of our favorite counting songs and this week you have to count backwards…..….

Your shape challenge this week can be an indoor or an outdoor challenge.  Choose your favourite shape and make either a picture using only that shape, you could make a paper collage, you could draw the shapes, you could chalk the shapes outdoors or you could print your shape picture. See if you have a vegetable going spare, potatoes are probably the best and ask your grown ups to cut your favorite shape into it and print away.  A quick tip for cutting the shape, use a cookie cutter to make the shape in the potato first, and then trim away the edges so you’re just left with the shape. Take a picture and send it to us, we’d love to see it.

Family Activities

How did you all get with our Art Project? Did you have some interesting conversations about the painting?

This week we’d like you to have a go at creating your own family portrait in whatever medium you would like. Think about who is going to be in the picture – don’t forget your pets, which colours (if any) you are going to use? Is it going to be on a plain background like the Lowry painting or are you going to be somewhere, the possibilities are endless…….you could even be in space if you wanted to be……….

Next week we’re going to be thinking about telling the story of your family portraits so have a think about that while you are creating your masterpieces……..

Family Group 1962 by L S Lowry

Don’t forget keep making fabulous things with your rainbow colours………. :)

Parents

As a fan of all things vintage I couldn’t end this newsletter without paying tribute to Dame Vera Lynn who sadly said goodbye to us yesterday.  Over her career she affectionately earned the title of National Treasure and what a legacy she has left in terms of music and the positive impact it can have during difficult times. After being told that her singing voice wasn’t good enough to be trained to become a singer, she didn’t give up. She became what we would call a ‘Rise to the challenge Rabbit’. She carried on singing and went on to bring hope and comfort to hundreds of people during difficult times through the power of song. Her most famous song ‘We’ll Meet Again’ has again taken on a special significance during lockdown and it has understandably become known as the anthem of hope. Below is a link to a new version of the song which was recorded not only in celebration of the 75thanniversary of VE Day but also as an acknowledgment of what our country is currently experiencing during lockdown. 75 years on the message it gives resonates just as significantly today as it did when it was first sung to cheer up the troops during the second world war.

If you have a few spare minutes this week share the link and remind yourselves and the children how true those words are. We have all stood side by side through an extraordinary and challenging time and despite the challenges everyone should feel proud, we really have all done our bit. As we continue to look ahead and adjust to the ‘new normal’ we are finally coming to the point where we can smile and think we will meet again and hopefully after the rain this week it will be on a sunny day. We really are looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Don’t forget we do enjoy hearing your news and we are so proud of how hard you have all been trying to navigate home learning while ensuring your families stay safe and well so please do get in touch via our e-mail address rainbow@malorees-inf.sch.uk if you would like to and if you have any questions we’ll certainly do our best to help.

As always, we continue to send you all our very best wishes and until ‘we meet again’, Take Care………..
